For the Salesians, making their works sustainable means taking care of the Common Home and acting in harmony with the vocation to integral ecology of the universal Church: in the heart of Latin America, this ambition finds concrete expression in a project to generate warm water through solar thermal energy at Ciudad Don Bosco in Medellin. An innovative initiative, supported by the Foundation.

Ciudad Don Bosco is located on the outskirts of Medellín.

It is a Salesian community that welcomes and accompanies children and young people from the city’s slums and from situations of threat or violation. It offers support for development and personal growth and carries out an important work in prevention, schooling of minors and reintegration of former children soldiers recruited in armed movements.

The complex is designed according to the most classic Salesian tradition: around the needs and activities of the young inhabitants. It has laboratories, sports fields, classrooms, residential rooms, where the children receive school education, technical training, and pedagogical support to re-establish their rights. Its peculiarity consists in the installation of Solar Collectors that provide warm water according to a sustainable and environmentally friendly system, up to 45°C, to the showers for children, adolescents, and young people who live in the boarding school. We have supported this project as DON BOSCO NEL MONDO Foundation, with the conviction that it is a ‘pilot’ experience also for interventions in Salesian boarding schools in other parts of the world.
